Overview

With rising living costs and housing pressures it’s more important than ever to have secure employment and a regular income.

If you’re a YFS client, Spark can help you become work ready by building your confidence and helping you with any logistical challenges that might be getting in your way.

Our Spark Employment Mentors focus on your individual strengths, interests and skills, so you feel prepared to start exploring education and work that feels right for you.

Our support is practical and personable. We can help with administrative barriers like transport, getting work clothes or enrolling in education, but we also check in regularly to keep you motivated, confident and moving forward.

What to expect

After Spark has received your referral, an Employment Mentor will contact you and ask about your interests and skills.

Together, you will begin planning your goals. This might include finding training opportunities, building a resume for the kind of work you want, or learning more about study options that are right for you.

Next, you will start meeting regularly to make change. Appointments are usually held at a YFS office (or other location), or over the phone. Your mentor will help you overcome challenges and link you with supports to help you succeed.

Spark is available to people already participating in housing, families, or financial wellbeing services at YFS.

Ask your staff worker about a referral to Spark.

Information for employers

If you’re a local employer, Spark can work with you to fill job vacancies with pre-screened, work-ready candidates from the program. This support is free.

Our Employment Mentors help reduce hiring risks by resolving common employee barriers (transport access, work clothing and uniforms, building confidence, and settling into work routines). Our mentors stay involved after placement, supporting both you and the employee to improve retention and outcomes.
